Vision and Mission
Cancer remains one of humanity’s greatest biomedical challenges. Despite significant advances in immunotherapy, precision medicine, and targeted treatments, tumor heterogeneity, immune suppression, therapeutic resistance, and disease recurrence continue to limit curative outcomes. Overcoming these barriers requires innovative approaches that integrate engineering, computational science, cancer biology, and clinical medicine.
The CIE Initiative seeks to transform scientific discoveries into clinically meaningful technologies and therapies by fostering interdisciplinary research, international collaboration, and translational innovation. The initiative primarily brings together the global cancer research, engineering, clinical, and biotechnology communities, including leading scientists, engineers, clinicians, industry innovators, and cancer institute leaders. It also engages patients, families, students, young professionals, and the broader public through education, outreach, and patient-centered innovation.
Our vision is to establish a globally connected community capable of transforming cancer care through engineering-driven innovation.
Scientific and Technological Priorities
The initiative focuses on four complementary areas:
Artificial Intelligence and Precision Oncology: AI, multimodal data integration, predictive modeling, and patient-specific digital twins to advance cancer diagnosis, therapeutic selection, treatment monitoring, and prediction of disease progression and resistance.
Immuno-Engineering and Cellular Therapies: Engineered immune cells, synthetic biology, and programmable therapeutics to overcome tumor-mediated immune suppression and improve treatment effectiveness, particularly in solid tumors.
Engineering the Tumor Microenvironment: Computational modeling, advanced biomaterials, biosensors, and organ-on-chip technologies to investigate tumor–immune interactions and develop strategies to overcome therapeutic resistance.
Advanced Cancer Therapeutics: Nanomedicine, targeted drug delivery, RNA- and gene-based therapies, and combinatorial treatment strategies to improve therapeutic precision, durability, and clinical effectiveness.
Global Collaboration and Societal Impact
Cancer is a global disease requiring coordinated international efforts. CIE aims to establish a sustainable collaborative network connecting universities, cancer institutes, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology innovators, and IEEE’s global engineering and technology communities.
By integrating expertise in biomedical engineering, AI, computer science, signal processing, robotics, and computational modeling with clinical oncology and immunology, the initiative seeks to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into clinical applications. Beyond research, CIE emphasizes public engagement, scientific education, and leadership development. Through international workshops, public forums, educational programs, and mentorship opportunities, the initiative aims to increase awareness of emerging cancer technologies and inspire the next generation of scientists, engineers, clinicians, and entrepreneurs.
Our objective is to move beyond traditional scientific conferences and publications toward measurable technological, clinical, and societal impact.

Long-Term Vision: Beyond a Workshop — A Global Movement
The IEEE Cancer and Immuno-Engineering Initiative represents more than a scientific program or series of international workshops. It is a global commitment to unite engineering, medicine, biology, industry, and society in addressing one of humanity’s most urgent health challenges.
Its long-term success will be measured by its ability to accelerate scientific discoveries, advance next-generation cancer therapies, strengthen clinical translation, and improve patient outcomes.
Our ambition is not simply to anticipate the future of cancer medicine, but to help create it.
Our passion and purpose make the impossible possible, transforming bold visions into reality and making a lasting difference in the lives of others.
